Ginsburg fought for the rights of women to choose life. She also fought for the rights of women to be able to work without discrimination, purchase homes, have bank accounts, and a myriad of other things that make it easier for women in desperate situations to choose life in the first place.
- Life is never as black & white or simple as it looks through a myopic lens. It’s never either/or. There are always “ands” and “buts” to everything. So before you paint Justice Ginsburg as some satanic villain, at least acknowledge the many abortions that likely DIDN’T happen because of her tireless advocacy for women and families.
- This is something I am reposting from a person new to Facebook. The life of this young girl is important and still should be. 1969. Talking to the 4 nursing students in the ER, myself but 21 years old and a recent grad hired as a clinical instructor, awaiting the next patient in the door.
- A policeman rushes in carrying a child with shiny copper hair. We grab a stretcher and take her to the cubicle for an initial assessment as he goes off to registration . She is pale, feverish and overwrought, barely coherent. I wipe her hot face with a cool washcloth and talk soft words of reassurance as my students undress to gown her and take her vital signs.
- A student gasps, eyes gone wide and I see the bloody wash cloth shoved between her legs. Another back alley abortion mutilation. Her name is Penny and she is 14. We clean her up, I page the OB/GYN who takes one quick look and schedules an OR.
My students are at the end of the shift and ask me if I can let them know how she does. Penny grabs my wrist and pleads for me to stay with her. I walk with her to the OR and then go wait in Recovery and post surgery, I sit with her and wait her awakening. The surgeon comes in and tells me of the damage and a hysterectomy and then he is off to Delivery Room saying if she wakes and asks, I can tell her.
And when she awakens and asks if she will be able to be a Mom, I tell her there are several ways to be a Mom. She cries and asks why did my Daddy do this to me. The man in a police uniform who brought her in. I struggled to answer why he took her for an abortion but she knew THAT why…. so Mom would not find out her husband had gotten their daughter pregnant.
