My daughter made this mosaic in middle school of the Empress Theodora image. We made sure to visit the original when we finally made it to Italy. May I add a note? Be sure to notice that Justinian is treading on the toes of Belisarius, the powerful general responsible for the reconquest of the Italian peninsula. Justinian is reminding him who’s the boss.
- Ravenna was the sleeper hit of a cruise we took. The Basilica San Vitale was the most peaceful and gorgeous church I’ve ever seen. Soft, pastel, and feminine. The mosaics stunning. The mausoleum was also so very beautiful and colorful. These are the antithesis of stone grey churches.
- Just finished reading The Bearkeepers Daughter. Its a historical fiction about these very people! Great read and it has this mosaic as its cover. Had the good fortune to visit Ravenna back in 2000. The Duomo and its mosaics were wonderful and I bought a small “mosaic kit” in the gift shop … perfect souvenir of a lovely place.
- My family comes from this part of Italy – le Marche – and no one knows about it. It’s so beautiful and warm and welcoming. Thanks Rick for featuring it, My son lived in Ravenna and studied with wonderful mosaic artists there. What a treasure
Was just there last April. Such a beautiful town. Stayed in Bologna and took day trips to Parma, Modena, Ravenna and Venice. Fantastic trip. The day we were there a wedding was being celebrated so we couldn’t visit the church!
I’ve seen these and they were stunning- this picture does not do it justice. One of my favorite stops for sure in Italy! We ,ove going to Ravenna. Never tire of the majesty of the mosaics. Can’t wait to return.
