I was majoring in Forestry at the UofW at the time. Working at the theater, repairing home stereos, and audio repair work for musicians, paid the rent. The power units for the carbon lamps used big vacuum tubes and put out a lot of heat. After hiking, skiing, or jogging in the PNW climate, the projection room was always warm and dry. I improvised a drying rack for my wet clothes and it worked great.

  • The Kniest family sold to the James & Prebezak families around 1975. In 1978 I trained Chris P to operate and maintain the equipment, and I moved on to other things. do you remember the old couple who owned it way be fore the Kniest family. ?
  • Grumpy lady selling popcorn and candy. I did janitor work at the theatre as well. Many of us worked there in various roles. Work, Friends, & Fun. We were blessed to call Edmonds home during that time.
  • The Edmonds Theater is a short walk for me. Have enjoyed many of the early release showings of the MCU films. And watched the Sounders win their MLS cup on the big screen as well.

This is how local should feel. Our local theater here in Columbia City, Seattle is in danger of closing. I only made it there once before the pandemic hit but it was so charming! Reminded me of the old downtown theaters in the Chicago suburbs where I grew up that were the $1 theaters and were full of HS kids and families. It was my Dad and mine favorite place to see a movie.

One of my favorite “local” movie theatres Rick. I will drive past the national ones to come to Edmonds…I’m confident I’ll see you there. Growing up in Edmonds this was where we would be every Saturday if we weren’t at the Beach. So many memories….So glad it’s still there.

Totally agree! I miss walking over to theater & seeing any movie but especially the 1st runs! My Grampy was a projectionist & I remember being in the booth when he’d point out the cue to start the other reel. Brings back great memories. My oldest daughter , Kim, lives down the road now in Edmonds and has always been a huge Rick Steves fan. She has traveled to many European cities now and taken one of his tours two years ago.
