Wonder, Ray Charles etc. Some people are racist. Some people discriminate against others. But just because it might be convenient to put a label on an entire group of people does not make it true or right. It is always amusing to hear from people, educated or not, who attempt to explain away the struggles of some minorities by insisting that everyone else is racist and discriminates against those who appear different. That is garbage. Articles addressing racism in medicine suggest many of the same things. To fight racism and discrimination, we all need to recognize, name, and understand these attitudes and actions. We need to be open to identifying and controlling our own implicit biases. We need to be able to manage overt bigotry safely, learn from it, and educate others. These themes need to be a part of medical education, as well as institutional policy. We need to practice and model tolerance, respect, open-mindedness, and peace for each other. A zero-tolerance environment should be backed by effective policies, practices, tools and training. Learn to appreciate diversity and respect people who are different in any way. People may be disabled, transgender, dark-skin, or have different hair colors. No one chose to be that way. If even people choose to believe or join specific groups, they have a right to belong and a right to believe what they want. We MUST learn to respect that, just as you would like others to respect you for who you are. Encourage and support children who have been discriminated at. Doing nothing is not a good idea, as it will not make discrimination go away. Do not think children are too young to know about prejudice and discrimination. As children grow, speak to them about prejudice and discrimination and how that hurts people. Speak to them about the need to appreciate differences. Practically speaking, all employers must comply with the Equal Pay Act. This includes private employers , the federal government, state and local governments, and labor unions. There are a few exceptions to the Equal Pay Act. Employers can pay men and women different salaries for doing equal work if the difference is based on seniority, merit, an incentive system, or any factor other than gender. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act amended Title VII to make it illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition . All employers covered by Title VII are covered by the PDA. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission enforces Title VII. The EEOC has offices throughout the country. To find the office nearest you, and to learn more about Title VII and other antidiscrimination laws, visit the EEOC’s website at Please note NCSL cannot provide advice or assistance to private citizens or businesses regarding employment-related matters.
