Steelers, whose history can be traced to a regional professional team established in the early 1920s, joined the NFL as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 8, 1933. The team belonged to owned by Art Rooney and took the original name from the baseball team of the same name, as was common for NFL teams at the time. [4] To distinguish them from the baseball team, local media called the soccer team Ropriceen, an unofficial nickname that existed for decades after the team used the current nickname. The ownership of Steelers has remained with the Rooney family since its inception. Art Rooney’s son, Dan Rooney, owned the team from 1988 until his death in 2017. The Steelers enjoyed a large fan base nicknamed Steeler Nation. They are currently playing their home games at Heinz Field on the North Side of Pittsburgh in the North Shore neighborhood, which also hosts the Pittsburgh Panthers University. Built in 2001, the stadium replaced the Three Rivers Stadium, which hosted Steelers in 31 seasons. Before Three Rivers, Steelers played their games at Pitt Stadium and at Forbes Field.
