Gravitational Wave Knowledge poster
Even from his earlier predictions, Einstein himself doubted that humanity could afford to detect gravitational waves. The reason for this is that the ripples will be extremely small in size. In the universe, only super-massive “extremes” are capable of producing gravitational waves strong enough for us to observe from the Earth. They could be two colliding neutron stars, the merging of two black holes or the catastrophic explosion of a giant star. Even so, ripples from two merged black holes of 1 million km in size will only be able to be detected at one atomic size on Earth.
