The United States Navy is an arm of the United States Army. This is one of the eight uniformed forces in the United States. As of December 31, 2008, the US Navy has about 331,682 active men and 124,000 in the navy reserve. The United States Navy has 284 active ships and more than 3,700 aircraft. The US Navy is the largest navy in the world; Its total combat fleet tonnage is greater than the total combat fleet tonnage of the next 13 major naval forces in the world combined.  The United States Navy also has one of the largest aircraft carriers in the world, with 10 in service and one (USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) built and will join the Navy. year 2019.
The Navy has a history from the Continental Navy that was established during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) and was slowly and completely disbanded after the war. The US Constitution provides the legal basis for creating a military force by giving Congress the power to “create and maintain a naval force”.
