In Mizuki’s Nihon Kyouiki, gashadokuro reappears in the following story: A man from Bingo prefecture (east of Hiroshima) enters the woods at night and hears a moan ‘my eyes are hurt.’ he later found a skeleton lying nearby, then removed the bamboo shoots growing in the skeleton’s eye sockets. Then the skeleton appeared to thank the man before disappearing.
The gashadokuro story is even rumored to take place in the 20th century. A man named Yuki and his friends were on their way to the station on a cold winter night. Yuki then invited his friends to take a shortcut, passing through a forest, though one of the group warned that the forest was once a battlefield and was haunted.
