The ransom is the price paid to free a person from death (Exodus 21:29, 30). In God’s original purpose, man was not old and dead. How do we know this? Because God told the first man, Adam, that only when he committed what the Bible called “sin” did he have to die. So if Adam did not sin, he would have lived forever (Genesis 2:16, 17; 5: 5). The Bible revealed that death was in the world through Adam. Adam commanded all of his descendants to sin as well as the sentence of death. We need the ransom to escape this death sentence. —Read Romans 5:12; 6:23.

Can anyone pay the ransom to free us from death? When we die, we only receive the penalty for our own sins. Imperfect humans cannot atone for the sins of others. —Read Psalm 49: 7-9.
