The US retreat was just about the time IS was reassembling its forces. The fight against IS will be weakened as Syrian Kurdish forces have to deal with Turkish troops and possibly the release of as many as 11,000 former IS militants. On the other hand, it is the displaced Kurdish force, carrying the mentality of being abandoned by the US, can follow the tendency of extreme violence, and this is a good opportunity for IS “reborn”.
Withdrawing US troops at this time will remove the “barrier” that prevents the Turkish army from attacking Kurdish forces, leading to unpredictable risks. “It will open new fronts in conflict and hundreds of thousands of displaced people in the region will fall into a humanitarian crisis,” said Eric Schwart, head of the International Refugee Organization.
According to the Syrian Human Rights Watch, Turkey’s early-stage attacks against Kurdish-controlled areas in northeastern Syria have killed at least 15 people, including 8. civilians and more than 40 others were injured.
