The megalodon shark (C. megalodon) is considered the largest shark ever to live on Earth and is one of the largest vertebrate predators in natural history. Megalodons raged in the oceans from about 28 million years to about 1.6 million years ago, until they disappeared completely during the Pleistocene extinction.
The Megalodon, as we know it, is a giant monster. Some of the teeth discovered from fossils of this large predator reach more than 17 cm (7 inches) in length, but most are 3 to 5 inches long (still large). Jaw reconstruction and fossils allow us to assume their maximum length would reach 54 feet (16.5 m), about three times that of the great white shark (C. carcharias ). When compared to each other, the T-rex tyrant was truly “underage”.
