The name Cryolophosaurus Ellioti means “crested lizard” – which refers to the fact that this carnivorous dinosaur lived in Antarctica, and that it had a prominent crest on top of its head. (Cryolophosaurus Ellioti doesn’t need to wear a sweater, though – 190 million years ago, Antarctica was a lot warmer than it is today) Fossil samples of Cryolophosaurus Ellioti have been nicknamed “Elvisaurus,” for it’s almost like rock-and-roll superstar Elvis Presley.
In 1970, archaeologists in Mongolia discovered, giant fossilized arms and hands of an unknown type of dinosaur. Deinocheirus -pronounced DIE-no-CARE-us – turned out to have a gentle, factory-munching, 15-legged “bird-mimicking” dinosaur closely related to the ornithomimus. (Why are so few deinocheirus left to explore? The rest of this individual would have been eaten by an even larger tyrannosaur!)
